Projektbeschreibung

Area 2: Innovative Herstellungsprozesse
Area 3: Anwendung innovativer Werkstoffe

Abstract

Initial situation: The existing COMET Center “Integrated Computational Materials, Process and Product Engineering (IC-MPPE)” has developed a wealth of new theoretical expertise, novel material characterization and physical simulation techniques, as well as new numerical simulation methods, and has successfully applied these to simultaneous, multi-method development of materials, processes and products. Supported by new collaborations with international research networks for the development and use of materials acceleration platforms (MAPs), we have developed our own MAP, ALPmat, which has already demonstrated its enormous potential for accelerating complex material and process development tasks
Problems to solve: The next necessary step is to expand our expertise to further develop MAPs for application towards materials-driven innovations. This includes expanding our own ALPmat platform and setting up new acceleration platforms for materials processing (ALP4Process) and materials use (ALP4Product). At our COMET Center IMI, various use cases need to be investigated to open up new applications and obtain feedback for improving the user interfaces.
The most important problems to be solved include (1) the development of new innovative materials with highly complex property profiles (that fulfil multiple property targets), (2) the design and processing of materials from secondary sources with relatively variable compositions, (3) the integration of large amounts of diverse data from a variety of different sources, (4) the set-up of new acceleration platforms (ALP4Process, ALP4Product), and (4) the development of expertise in integrating MAPs into the digital ecosystem of the partners.
Motivation to carry out the COMET Center IMI: Austria has a strong production sector with world leading companies in areas such as metallurgical, chemical and mechanical engineering, mobility, supply, alternative energy, and electronics industry. New intelligent and sustainable materials and process technologies are urgently needed to improve competitiveness.
Overall goals of the COMET Center IMI: Main objective of IMI is to advance expertise for the further development of material related platforms, integrate them into larger digital ecosystems, and use them to realize materials-based innovations including circular technologies and solutions. This requires (1) further development of MAPs (expanding ALPmat and new platforms ALP4Process and ALP4Product), (2) integration of MAPs into digital ecosystems of partners, (3) circular design of advanced multifunctional materials, including their manufacturing processes and applications, (3) further development and use of artificial intelligence (AI)-supported methods along the value circle, and (4) training young scientists in computer-aided techniques and digital platforms.
Scientific-technological challenges: The most important scientific and technological challenges are to develop new validated frameworks for (1) automated FAIR data integration (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) from various sources (experiments, simulations, literature) for materials-based research along the value circle, (2) improving expertise in high-fidelity physics-based and AI-enhanced modeling, (3) integrating models and data across different scales and areas of physics, and (4) accelerating the development of new materials, processes and applications.
Main features of the research program: The research program focuses on fundamental, experimental and simulation methods, computational tools and their integration into MAPs, as well as on the use of these platforms to accelerate development along the value circle.
The activities are structured in the following three Research Areas:
Area 1: Circular Advanced Materials
Area 2: Advanced Manufacturing Processes
Area 3: Advanced Materials Application
