Abstract

Goals:
The main goals of the COMET Center for “Integrated Computational Materials, Process and Product Engineering (IC-MPPE)” are:
(1) Achieve high international visibility in the field of Integrated Computational Materials, Process and Products Engineering (IC-MPPE).
(2) Develop new models, simulation tools, software, workflows, and technological expertise for IC-MPPE, and promoting implementation of IC-MPPE in industrial practice.
(3) Use the know-how and methods to realize material-based innovations as well as resource-efficient and environmentally and climate-friendly solutions along the production chain.

Thematic focus:
The COMET Center focuses on the development and utilization of fundamentals, experimental methods, simulation tools, software and workflows necessary for IC-MPPE, this includes:
• New multi-scale material, process, and product models (physics-based, data-driven, hybrid, forward, inverse), simulation tools, software, and workflows.
• New simulation tools to support the digitalization of the value chain - digital models, shadows and twins for materials, processes and products.
• New experimental methods to validate material models, simulation tools and software, and to determine model parameters.

Innovation potential:
The innovation potential includes material-based innovations along the production chain, such as new materials, new manufacturing processes and new products, but also new models, simulation tools and software for computer-aided design and planning processes, as well as the realization of smart processes and products with embedded intelligence. The implementation of the innovations in practice is ensured by the cooperative execution of the projects primarily with Austrian and European companies, which are often international leaders in their business fields.

Planned changes in the thematic focus in Funding Period 2 (FP2)
The following new priorities have been added to the research program:
• New sustainable materials, processes and products – resource- and CO2 saving production and use, using secondary raw materials, avoiding critical raw materials and hazardous materials.
• New material development platform - using artificial intelligence methodologies to integrate data from physical modeling, experiments, and literature in one workflow.
• New focus on data from simulation and experiments - quality-assured and labeled storage in machine-readable form for automated computational use.
• New research field for electrical energy storage materials.
• New semi-automated workflow for the construction of hybrid semi-parametric models of physical systems – combining physics-based and data driven models.
• New condition monitoring and control of manufacturing processes using hybrid models, as well as and embedding intelligence in components
