Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

The substantial investments of Europe into the Copernicus space segment, i.e. the up-stream sector, represented by the different Sentinel missions require further significant follow-on activities in the mid- and down-stream sector to support the EC Destination Earth initiative. That would ensure the best utilisation of the daily captured Copernicus Earth Observation (EO) big data for the different envisaged application areas defined by the Copernicus services and beyond. Next to the establishment of a data distribution mechanism and dedicated federated data and processing environments, that can be accessed by the scientific, public and private sector, further developments for the advanced pre-processing of the different distributed Level 1 or 2 data are essential for advanced application of higher level satellite data. Especially the utilisation of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite data (Sentinel-1) requires extensive pre-processing. The SAR data suffers due to the existence of speckle and thus cannot unfold its full potential. Hence, there are research and development needs required to improve the quality of the SAR images to allow optimised and advanced SAR processing. Pre-processing, and in particular complex valued SAR despeckling, is the key aspect under consideration where artificial intelligence and, more specifically machine learning and deep learning, have the potential to pave the way to enhanced products beyond state-of-the-art.
This proposed project AI4SAR suggests developing and applying different artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms based on unsupervised, active and knowledge-based learning to be utilised for the advanced pre-processing of SAR data. The developed prototype solutions shall consider different scattering mechanisms with respect to land use resp. land cover. Moreover, the approach shall incorporate various learning strategies into standard SAR-based applications, like SAR interferometry or SAR-to-optical point matching. Machine learning (ML), and in particular deep learning, will also be applied for advanced ground control point transfer. The resulting novel opportunities will be demonstrated with three different use cases in the application areas of (1) enhanced SAR-based forest products, (2) SBAS-based deformation monitoring, and (3) ground control point transfer.
The prototype demonstrator will be utilised for joint scientific publications, further follow-up research activities and the further commercial activities carried out by EODC. Beyond the activities within the proposed AI4SAR project, the developed algorithms and resulting products and services will contribute to further activities and future operational services offered by project partners. Furthermore, the developed AI solution will be embedded in the Big EO data processing environment operated by EODC. The SAR pre-processing methods and results can then be disseminated within the existing - currently freely available - Austrian Data Cube (ACube) service within the large Austrian EO user community of the EODC and beyond the Austrian borders to the whole EODC partner, customer and federation network (such as the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the openEO platform (ESA) and EODC’s federated data offering within the WEkEO DIAS). Finally, AI4SAR has the potential for the future integration into ESA’s Network of Resources (NoR).
