Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

Sustainable synthetic aviation fuels (SAFs) play a key role in the defossilisation of the aviation sector. The biggest challenge is an efficient SAF production on a commercial scale, in order to minimize the need for renewable energy.
The overall objective of the HiPoLiq flagship project is to demonstrate a Power to Liquid (PtL) plant consisting of a high-temperature co-electrolysis (Co-SOEC) coupled with a Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) to produce SAF from renewable energy, water and CO2. By heat integration of the two processes, an increase of the overall PtL efficiency to more than 55% is targeted. This overall system is demonstrated at an electric connected power level of 200 kW of renewable electricity. In a first step, synthesis gas (H2 and CO) is produced based on the innovative Co-SOEC process with an efficiency of over 95%. In the second step, H2, CO and remaining CO2 are fed to a low-temperature FTS, producing syncrude with mainly liquid (higher than C5) paraffinic products. Due to the highly efficient Co-SOEC process, the heat coupling with the FTS, and other optimizations such as the elimination of the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) process step, the PtL process will require 30-40% less renewable energy input compared to a process chain consisting of low temperature electrolysis, RWGS and FTS. The PtL demo plant for the industrial production of SAF will therefore set new standards in terms of energy efficiency. The key targets of HiPoLiq are:
• Installation and long-term (more than 10,000 h) operation of a 200 kW PtL demonstration plant with a PtL efficiency of more than 55%
• Decrease the overall system energy demand by more than 35% by heat integration of Co-SOEC with FTS
• Efficiency of Co-SOEC unit more than 95% for syngas production including excess heat integration of the FTS
• Development and implementation of a process simulation to determine optimal operation (max. product yield and highest PtL efficiency) points of the plant
• Optimization of the Co-SOEC unit in terms of long-term stability and degradation rates + Optimization of the FTS in terms of conversion rates and operation for SAF production
• Development of a methodology for FTS catalyst lifetime prediction considering abrasion, poisoning and degradation in real time
• Multi-GW upscaling and preparation of the roll-out of industrial PtL plants optimized for SAF production
The industry partners of this project have the necessary know-how for the roll-out and subsequent commercialization of such plants in Austria and abroad. This is supported by three well-known associated industry partners (AUA, Airport Vienna, Wien Energie) with extensive knowledge of market requirements regarding SAF production and use.
