Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

Motivation: The term Industry 4.0 (I4.0) has dominated the discussion about the increasing digitalization and networking in industrial and service-related value chains for around 10 years. The wood industry is an important economic sector in both Austria and Germany. On the one hand, wood is a sustainable and future-oriented material; on the other hand, the processing of the raw material is very machine- and energy-intensive. It is therefore not surprising that companies in the wood industry are particularly interested in measures to increase efficiency. At the same time, a particularly high degree of individualization is expected for products made of wood. Countless variants and combination possibilities or even the production of individually adapted single pieces are not uncommon. Even though there is much to be said for intensive use and exchange of data, companies in the wood industry differ relatively widely in terms of their I4.0 maturity level. There are pioneers as well as latecomers, especially among SMEs, who are particularly at risk of falling behind. Therefore, the wood industry is very well suited to define cross-industry best practices. In addition to high demand, it also offers enormous potential.
Objectives: Within the framework of champI4.0ns, the use of data relevant for production will be advanced by showing, on the one hand, how an intelligent and sovereign use of data can succeed in a federative ecosystem using examples from the wood industry and, on the other hand, by developing and providing methods and services for addressing central challenges. The intention is 1) to realise and document demonstrators, 2) to further develop and apply big data technologies, 3) to co-design and apply guidelines and standards, 4) to build competences and capacities and 5) to promote exchange between actors. champI4.0ns demonstrates the added value of using data relevant for production in the application fields of traceability, planning and control and quality assurance. In each of the three fields, positive contributions are made to achieving sustainability goals, from creating awareness of sustainable development, to higher productivity through innovation, to more efficient use of energy and natural resources.
Results: The central result of champI4.0ns is the realisation of demonstrators that can be embedded in existing data infrastructures and ecosystems. In addition, methods and services for extracting, organising, processing and analysing data, for protecting data and for ensuring the availability of data will be developed. These technical developments are complemented by guidelines and standards for the efficient and trustworthy handling of data. At its core, it is about creating an open and agile culture of innovation that makes sustainable development in production – in the wood industry and beyond – possible. This development is driven by a lively and cross-sectoral exchange between informed actors. The champI4.0ns consortium attaches particular importance to taking into account preliminary work from activities such as Data Market Austria, making full use of interfaces to current initiatives such as International Data Spaces, Gaia-X and EuProGigant, and playing a central role in shaping future developments such as the Green Data Hub.
