Pro²Future (Products and Production Systems of the Future) ist ein österreichisches Forschungs- und COMET-Kompetenzzentrum, das seit 1. April 2017 operativ ist. Mit dem vorliegenden Mid Term Evaluation Report wird über die ersten 4 Jahre (1.4.2017 - 31.3.2021, Förderperiode 1, FP1) berichtet und die zweite Förderperiode für die kommenden 4 Jahre (1.4.2021 - 31.3.2025, För-derperiode 2, FP2) beantragt.

In der FP1 hat Pro²Future kognitive industrielle Systeme (CIS) mittels Einbettung kognitiver Fähigkeiten in Produkte und Fertigungssysteme entwickelt, um diese in die Lage zu versetzen, wahrzunehmen, zu verstehen, zu begreifen, zu interpretieren, zu lernen, und schlusszufolgern, und auf autonome, selbstorganisierte Weise zu handeln - zusammen mit Menschen. Pro²Future strebt die Konsolidierung der Forschungsergebnisse des Zentrums in zwei Kernbereichen an: (i) Cognitive Products (Area 4.1), and (ii) Cognitive Production Systems (Area 4.2). Zu diesem Zweck bedient sich Pro²Future zielorientierter Forschung zur Untermauerung von Produkt- und Herstellungsinnovationen auf der Grundlage empirisch belegter Ergebnisse der angewandten Forschung. Dies geschieht in drei unterstützenden Bereichen: (i) Perception and Aware Systems (Area 1), (ii) Cognitive Robotics and Shop Floors (Area 2), and (iii) Cognitive Decision Making (Area 3).

Pro²Future und ein weiterer COMET K1-Kompetenzzentrums-Anwärter, das Center for Digital Production (CDP), mussten als Auflage vor Vertrag ein gemeinsames Forschungsprogramm (Common Research Program, CRP) unter Kombination der komplementären Kompetenzen vorschlagen, und in Demonstratorprojekten mit einem Mindestvolumen von 2,4 Mio. EUR pro Zentrum für jeweils zwei Jahre (insgesamt 9,6 Mio. EUR) implementiert werden muss. Das Ergebnis sollte nach zwei Jahren mit einer Stop-or-Go-Entscheidung für beide Zentren evaluiert werden. Diese bislang noch nie dagewesene Form einer Forschungs¬förderungs¬auflage hat die ursprünglichen Entwicklungspläne beider Zentren erheblich und bedrohlich gefordert. 24 (Pro²Future) und 27 (CDP) Forschungsmitarbeiter haben an CRP gearbeitet und in 3 Demonstratorprojekten mit 12 Demo-Cases erfolgreich Proof-of-concept Lösungen für technologisch anspruchsvolle und industriell relevante Probleme geliefert. Nach Vorlage des Zweijahres-Evaluierungsberichtes und einem Hearing wurde CRP von einer internationalen Bewertungsjury positiv bewertet. Diese Jury empfahl, diese zentrumsübergreifende Zusammenarbeit auch in der kommenden Förderperiode fortzusetzen. Das Forschungsprogramm für ein Follow-up CRP ist Teil dieses Antrages (CRP II).

Für FP2 sind 20 MFPs geplant, die von 17 Unternehmenspartnern und 12 wissenschaftlichen Partnern unterzeichnet werden, um unsere Ziele in den Areas 1, 2, 3, 4.1 und 4.2 zu verfolgen. Unter Berücksichtigung (i) des internationalen Fortschritts in der wissenschaftlichen Industrieforschung, (ii) der jüngsten technologischen Fortschritte in den Bereichen IKT und Mechanical Engineering und (iii) der Empfehlung des Internationalen Wissenschaftlichen Beirats (ISAB) vom Mai 2019, wurde die Forschungsagenda der Areas in Pro²Future um die Themen Künstliche Intelligenz, Complexity Science und sicherheitsbezogene Amendment Topics (Pervasive AI, Engineering for Distributed AI, Explainable AI, Analytical User Guidance, Causality, Edge Analytics, Failsafe and Robust AI, AI for Sustainable Production) erweitert. In FP2 ist geplant, den MitarbeiterInnenstand auf 55 (Kopfzahl) zu erweitern, davon 9 für Management und Verwaltung des Zentrums.

Das Konsortium der Unternehmenspartnern wird in FP2 auf 34 Unternehmenspartner ausgeweitet, von denen 7 neue Partner bereits Letters of Commitment (LoCs) unterzeichnet haben (Antemo, AUVA, Elektrobit, D-ARIA, D-MTM, Fuchshofer, Spryflash), und sich bei weiteren 8 neuen Partnern (AT & S, battenfeld, ECON, MIBA AG, Microtronics, nubid, Bosch, sanSirro, Zurk) die Unterschriftsleistung aufgrund von COVID-19 verzögert hat.

Abstract

Pro2Future (Products and Production Systems of the Future) is an Austrian Research and Compentence Centre for Excellent Tech-nologies founded and in operation since April 1, 2017. This Mid Term Evaluation Report is reporting on the first 4 years (1.4.2017 – 31.3.2021, Funding Period 1, FP1), and proposing for the upcoming 4 years (1.4.2021 – 31.3.2025, Funding Period 2, FP2).

In research during FP1, Pro2Future has developed Cognitive Industrial Systems (CIS) by embedding cognitive capabilities into prod-ucts and manufacturing systems so as to enable them to perceive, understand, comprehend, interpret, learn, reason and deduce, and act in an autonomous, self-organized way - together with humans. Pro²Future seeks the consolidation of the Centre’s research results in two core areas, namely (i) Cognitive Products (Area 4.1), and (ii) Cognitive Production Systems (Area 4.2). In order for this, Pro²Future involves goal-oriented research to underpin product and manufacturing innovations based on empirically evidenced applied research results. This is coming from three underpinning areas: (i) Perception and Aware Systems (Area 1), (ii) Cognitive Robotics and Shop Floors (Area 2), and (iii) Cognitive Decision Making (Area 3).

As a jury requirement before contract in FP1, Pro²Future and a second COMET K1 competence centre candidate, the Centre for Digital Production (CDP), had to develop and propose a Common Research Programme (CRP) -based on the respective complemen-tary competencies- in the form of demonstrator projects, having to amount to a minimum volume of 2,4 Mio. EUR from each centre every two years (total 9.6 Mio. EUR), and having to be approved via a stop-or-go decision at mid-term. This never seen before fund-ing requirement has significantly and severely disrupted the proposed evolution plans of both centres. 24 (Pro²Future) and 27 (CDP) researchers have worked on CRP, successfully delivering proofs of concepts for new solutions to technologically significant and industrially relevant problems, in 3 demonstrator projects exhibiting 12 demo cases. After submitting a two-year CRP evaluation report on June 27, 2019, and a panel hearing on September 26, 2019, CRP has been very positively evaluated by an international evaluation jury. This jury in its final statement recommended to continue this cross-centre collaboration also in the upcoming fund-ing period. The research programme for a follow-up CRP is part of this proposal (CRP II).

As for FP2, 20 MFPs are planned to be contracted by 17 company partners and 12 scientific partners following our goals in the Areas 1, 2, 3, 4.1 and 4.2. Considering (i) international progress in scientific industrial research, (ii) the most recent technological advances in ICT and Mechanical Engineering, and (iii) following the recommendation of the Pro2Future International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) of May 2019, the research agenda in the Pro²Future Areas has been enhanced by Artificial Intelligence, Complexity Science and Safety related Amendment Topics (PervasiveAI, Engineering for Distributed AI, ExplainableAI, Analytical User Guidance, Causality, Edge Analytics, Failsafe and Robust AI, AI for Sustainable Production).

The consortium of company partners will expand to 34 company partners in FP2, out of which 7 new partners have already signed letters of commitment (Antemo, AUVA, Elektrobit, D-ARIA, D-MTM, Fuchshofer, Spryflash), and further 8 new partners (AT & S, bat-tenfeld, ECON, MIBA AG, Microtronics, nubid, Bosch, sanSirro, Zurk) delayed in their signature provision due to COVID-19. (Due to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis negotiations with 34 further industrial partner candidates could not be signature finalized by May 22, 2020. As agreed with the funding agency FFG, the respective pending LoCs will be integrated in the upcoming weeks.)
