Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

The process of digitalisation did not tackle the AEC (architecture, engineering, construction) industry yet as much as it did the other industries. Lack of digitalisation slows down innovation, reduces productivity and increases the risk. The available software tools still do not answer the end user practices and workflows. One of the answers to the lack of digitalisation are BIM (Building Information Modelling) workflows and software tools. They are evermore present in the planning stage. Nevertheless, integrated planning is still facing many difficulties, as BIM models are used by different stakeholders, hovewer mostly isolatedly, and interdisciplinary design is still sequential and not transparent. BIM data exchange workflows furthermore reflect the traditional planning processes that have been present since the exchange of hand-drawn plans. To overcome these issues, support the innovation and achieve the full potential of BIM, it is necessary to create a business model which can support the synchronous seamless data exchange with BIM workflows.
This research will first explore the current practices and workflows in the industry. BIM based data exchange and planning processes will be analysed for their automation possibilities. Thus, a data management system will be developed that supports multiple software tools, is not oriented towards a specific proprietary software tool, meaning it is software independent. Smart Contracts describing the automated value chain processes will reflect the new digital model-based planning communication. Blockchain technology that can support the new workflows will be developed and integrated in the new BIM-based data processing framework.
The business model investigated in this research uses Blockchain technology for the planning stage. Blockchain technology calls for a rethinking of the existing workflows, and this technology has the potential to help exploit the potential of BIM workflows. Blockchain supported workflows would increase the transparency, speed up the planning processes and simplify the communication by providing real-time insight into the planning stage, and facilitate the enquiry possibilities for each planning step.
In the new business model multiple advantages to the existing workflows can be expected. Besides achieving a seamless exchange and automated communication steps, the new model will provide all users with the latest version, trace the changes and allow for faster and more secure data flows. Additionally, the implementation of Blockchain technology, with varying stakeholders in design, construction and operation phases, will be explored for the whole building life cycle through the cooperation with the partners in Germany and Austria..
