Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

Nanoimprint Lithography (NIL) is a key enabling micro and nanopatterning technology with particular relevance for photonics, where high resolution, large area nanostructuring is essential for devices such as meta optics, waveguides, diffractive optical elements, functional surfaces and advanced optoelectronic components. Over the past decades, NIL has driven major technological progress in optics, photonics, and life sciences by enabling the precise and cost efficient integration of micro and nanostructures into industrial products. Despite this proven maturity for certain applications, the broader adoption of NIL in production as well as in research and innovation remains limited. This is mainly due to the lack of open, flexible and state of the art wafer scale NIL infrastructure that supports systematic process development under industrially relevant conditions.
The proposed project directly addresses this strategic gap through the acquisition of a process flexible, wafer level nanoimprinter optimized for both micro and nanoscale structuring and explicitly designed for R&D environments. This infrastructure will form the technological backbone of the Nanoimprint Science Centre (NIL SC) at PROFACTOR, ensuring open, transparent and non discriminatory access to advanced NIL capabilities for universities, research organisations, start ups and industrial partners. By enabling controlled wafer level process development, the NIL SC strengthens Europe’s technological sovereignty and photonics value chains, fully in line with the transformation goals for digital and key technologies.
The NIL SC will accelerate the translation of fundamental scientific results into scalable, production relevant solutions. Such applied research is essential to address current challenges in photonics and related digital technologies, including waveguides for AR/VR glasses, DNA sequencing substrates, advanced micro optical and wafer level optical components, energy efficient LED and display structures, meta optics, plasmonic devices and multifunctional surfaces. Developing these processes directly on industrially relevant equipment significantly reduces technological risk, avoids later process migration and strengthens European value creation in critical technology sectors.
Austria has established a strong and visible position in NIL through early initiatives such as the Austrian Nanoinitiative, with PROFACTOR contributing key developments for more than two decades. Building on this foundation, the proposed infrastructure reinforces Austria’s and Europe’s competitiveness in photonics, nano and microfabrication and aligns strongly with the objectives of the European Chips Act and #uppervision2030, which aim to expand research capabilities, strengthen industrial resilience and promote sovereign, secure and transparent digital technologies. The high relevance of the NIL SC is demonstrated by 14 letters of intent from universities, applied research institutions and industry.
Beyond technological excellence, the NIL SC will support education, talent development and the formation of future start ups by lowering entry barriers to advanced nanofabrication. By providing open access to a strategically important photonics enabling key technology, the project will sustainably strengthen Austria’s research and innovation landscape and create long term benefits in terms of competitiveness, societal resilience and value creation.
