Projektbeschreibung
Abstract
HAIQUAM is aimed to develop the next generation quantum-based Optical Coherence Tomography with undetected photons (QOCT) in the mid-infrared range that features an ultrabroadband quantum light sources, a compact and robust interferometer architecture, and physics informed AI to deliver superior axial resolution, stability, and interpretability for advanced medical additive manufacturing. The project targets a key limitation of current OCT systems—resolving internal structures, material transitions, and micro defects in high performance ceramic and polymer components, including spatially graded architectures.
HAIQUAM introduces a broadband source of entangled photon pairs through tailored engineering of phase-matching properties for non-degenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion, employing chirped and aperiodic poling in potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) and lithium niobate (LN) and targeted dispersion management. By extending the biphoton bandwidth, the project aims at extreme ~5–6 μm axial resolution in the mid IR (decoupled from the lateral resolution, on the scale of the wavelength of the probing light), enabling layer level analysis of additively manufactured parts. In parallel, sensing with undetected photons is transitioned from delicate table top setups to a compact, alignment tolerant interferometer designed for long term stability and industrial environments, supporting future at line and in line deployment.
The second pillar is a physics informed AI framework for enhanced QOCT signal interpretation. A Monte Carlo simulation platform generates clean and realistic QOCT datasets (accounting for speckles, interferometric artifacts and scattering). Using these data, advanced B scan and volumetric architectures are trained to separate systemic noise and geometry dependent distortions while preserving weak quantum interference features often suppressed by conventional denoising. The objective is improved robustness, structural fidelity, and transferability from simulation to experiment.
The integrated system is validated on five use cases representative of medical additive manufacturing: ceramic and bioceramic implants and polymeric dental aligners. These demanding applications are ideal demonstrators for the targeted resolution, reliability, and interpretability improvements.
HAIQUAM promotes sustainability by earlier defect detection and more accurate process monitoring, which reduces energy use and material waste. AI supported reconstruction lowers repeat measurements and extends the lifetime of sensing infrastructure. The project improves the safety and precision of patient specific components through transparent, data driven quality assurance.
The consortium brings together four complementary partners: RECENDT for QOCT, PROFACTOR for physics informed AI and nanoimprinting, LITHOZ for high precision ceramic 3D printing, and LUXINERGY for advanced photopolymers and dental aligner manufacturing. All partners have collaborated successfully in previous projects, forming a well aligned team that integrates quantum technology, AI and medical additive manufacturing.
By combining engineered quantum light, compact interferometry, and physics informed AI, HAIQUAM will establish a powerful measurement tool for medical additive manufacturing and beyond—enabling higher part quality, reduced process losses, and new functional material capabilities that strengthen Austria’s technological competitiveness.
