Projektbeschreibung
Abstract
VAGISCAN is an innovative point-of-care diagnostic system designed for rapid and differentiated risk assessment of vaginal infections in gynecological care. The project aims to enable immediate, guideline-based clinical decision-making directly at the point of care, thereby reducing misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment, disease progression, and unnecessary follow-up visits.
Unlike currently available single-indication tests, VAGISCAN integrates the simultaneous detection of key pathogenic microorganisms (e.g., Candida albicans, Gardnerella vaginalis), protective and dysbiotic Lactobacillus species, as well as an enzymatic marker for bacterial vaginosis from a single vaginal swab. Individual qualitative test results are digitally captured and algorithmically combined into a clinically actionable three-tier risk classification (no action required / monitoring recommended / treatment required).
By separating measurement from interpretation, the system enables standardized, robust evaluation while maintaining flexibility in clinical decision logic. VAGISCAN bridges the gap between highly sensitive laboratory diagnostics and practical, scalable point-of-care solutions suitable for routine clinical use. In addition to clinical benefits, the project addresses sustainability by reducing laboratory infrastructure, sample logistics, and patient waiting times. VAGISCAN demonstrates strong potential for commercialization and spin-off formation in the field of medical diagnostics.
