Projektbeschreibung
Abstract
Initial Situation, Problems or Motivation
Climate change is increasingly altering European agricultural systems through rising temperatures, shifting precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme events such as droughts, heavy rainfall, and frosts. These changes affect crop development, reduce yields, and may shift the climatic suitability of production areas. Translating climate information into actionable insights for farmers, agribusinesses, and policymakers remains challenging, creating a pressing need for targeted adaptation strategies.
At the same time, the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative provides unprecedented climate simulation capabilities, which, paired with validated Earth Observation data, can support advanced data-driven climate risk analyses.
Goals and Innovation:
The project develops a proof-of-concept for the Agro - Climate Risk Intelligence (ACRI) platform, integrating climate simulations from the DestinE Climate and Extremes Digital Twins with Earth Observation (EO) data, the ARIS crop growth modelling framework as well as AI-based data fusion methodologies. ARIS (Agroclimatic Risk and Impact Simulator) models crop development and sensitive agrophenological phases (emergence, flowering, maturity, senescence) under current and future climate scenarios derived from DestinE and calibrated with EO inputs.
The platform’s key objectives include:
• Identifying major cropping risks - including heat stress, drought, extreme rainfall and waterlogging, and frost events.
• Quantifying climate impacts on crop development, focusing on sensitive phenological phases under future climate conditions.
• Estimating yield implications and the risk of production losses.
• Evaluating the future suitability of agricultural production areas, highlighting regions with low climate risk and high yield potential.
• Providing flexible platform capabilities for generic crop types, large-scale regions, and user-defined crop varieties, fields, areas of interest, and thresholds for acceptable climate stress.
Expected Results
The project provides a methodological framework and analytical workflows for assessing climate-related cultivation risks, including indicators for heat stress, drought stress, waterlogging, and frost risk. Demonstrations and visualizations illustrate the spatial patterns of climate-related risks as well as their potential impacts on selected crops. The results demonstrate the feasibility of combining DestinE climate data, Earth observation information, and crop modeling to analyze agricultural climate risks, and form the basis for potential future development into an operational service.
