Projektbeschreibung
Abstract
QUAPITAL is a cross-border quantum communication project aimed at establishing a quantum-secure optical fibre connection between Vienna (Austria) and Frankfurt (Germany). The project implements entanglement-based Quantum Key Distribution (eQKD) to enable highly secure data transmission that is resilient against both classical attacks and future threats posed by quantum computers. In doing so, QUAPITAL represents a key building block of the terrestrial backbone of the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI).
Rapid advances in quantum computing threaten existing cryptographic methods. Critical sectors such as finance, energy, public administration, and telecommunications depend on long-term secure encryption. QUAPITAL addresses this risk through eQKD, a technology based on quantum entanglement. Any attempt at eavesdropping inevitably alters the quantum state and is immediately detectable, thereby ensuring genuine end-to-end security.
Along the Vienna–Frankfurt corridor, five trusted nodes will be deployed, enabling quantum key distribution over distances of up to 350 km per segment. Compared to conventional QKD approaches, this architecture reduces the number of required trusted nodes, increases efficiency, and lowers overall infrastructure complexity. The solution integrates optical components, electronics, IT security measures, and monitoring systems into existing telecommunications infrastructure via dedicated dark fibre.
The project is coordinated by Quantum Industries GmbH in collaboration with strong partners from the financial and cybersecurity sectors, including Erste Group, Erste Digital, NTS, and TÜV NORD IT. The financial sector serves as a real-world use case, demonstrating Quantum Key-as-a-Service (QKaaS) under operational conditions. Extensive testing, penetration testing, and security validations ensure practical applicability and robustness.
Furthermore, QUAPITAL strengthens Europe’s digital sovereignty by relying on European technologies and supply chains. The project supports standardisation and certification processes in the field of quantum communication and lays the foundation for a scalable, interoperable European quantum infrastructure.
QUAPITAL is therefore not merely a technology project, but a strategic contribution to the long-term protection of critical digital infrastructures in Europe.
