Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

The green transition requires accelerated change in mobility, energy, and production systems. Although artificial intelligence (AI) offers powerful tools for optimization and forecasting, its application in critical infrastructures remains limited. Decision-makers cannot trust or justify recommendations that they cannot understand. explAIn-X addresses this challenge with human-centered, explainable AI frameworks that transform opaque algorithms into transparent decision support systems.

Despite high forecasting accuracy, AI penetration in core industrial sectors is low. Rail freight, energy, and food retail struggle with inefficient resource use, curtailments, and avoidable losses. The cause is not a lack of technical capability, but a lack of comprehensible, actionable explanations that meet operational and regulatory requirements.

explAIn-X closes this gap with four core methodological innovations:
(1) Explainable optimization and forecasting: Embedding XAI methods in optimization and forecasting processes to reveal cost drivers, trade-offs, and uncertainties.
(2) Hybrid frameworks: Scalable combination of model predictive control (safety, interpretability) and reinforcement learning (adaptability, uncertainty handling) to overcome the limitations of deterministic and non-transparent approaches.
(3) Cross-domain architectures: Development of a unified framework for rail logistics, energy management, and food supply chains to ensure transferability and avoid silos.
(4) Human-in-the-loop integration: Interactive explanation and feedback mechanisms that enable experts to review scenarios, evaluate alternatives, and improve models in a targeted manner.

The concepts are being validated in three pilot projects. X-Mobility reduces empty runs by 10% through explainable geospatial forecasts and digital twins, while simultaneously increasing overall utilization. X-Energy uses hybrid control systems for power plants with storage facilities, reduces renewable energy curtailment by 15%, and increases market transparency. X-Production reduces food waste along the supply chain by at least 10% through hierarchical demand forecasts and redistribution scenarios.

In addition to technological advances, explAIn-X strengthens the organizational anchoring of explainable AI through competence building, continuous feedback loops, and inclusive design approaches. Explainability is understood as an organizational capability to ensure sustainable adoption and acceptance.

The consortium of Austrian research institutions, SMEs, and industry partners creates direct added value in Austria and strengthens Europe's position in sustainable AI. explAIn-X shows that the path to AI-supported green transformation leads through transparent systems that empower human decision-makers. The project accelerates the use of AI in critical infrastructures, supports Austria's goal of climate neutrality by 2040, and sets new standards for trustworthy AI in relevant areas.
