HOMEBASE St Martin – Pionierprojekt: Kirchen-Ensembles werden zu klimafitten, inklusiven NEB-Zentren des Zusammenhalts

Projektbeschreibung

Motivation
In praktisch jedem größeren Ort und jeder Stadt Österreichs wie auch Europas steht ein Kirchengebäude – meist direkt im Zentrum (berühmtes Beispiel: Stephansdom als Mittelpunkt von Wien). Häufig sind Kirchen zudem baukulturell besonders bedeutend. Europaweit gibt es über 500.000 Sakralbauten – und damit bieten diese Gebäude enormes Potential, um
• die NEB-Initiative breitenwirksam relevant & für Menschen erlebbar zu machen
• lokale Mitgestaltungs-Initiativen zu initiieren
• lokale Bevölkerung zusammenzubringen & in "Community Centers" zu vernetzen.

Das denkmalgeschützte Kirchen-Ensemble „St. Martin – Liefering“ ist ein repräsentatives Beispiel und soll als skalierbares Pilotprojekt
• interdisziplinär, gemeinschaftlich, partizipativ in ein NEB-Quartier transformiert
• zu inklusiven, identitätsstiftenden „Community Center“ für umliegende Stadtviertel
• einem Ort, wo alle Menschen willkommen & angenommen – „at home“ – sind,
• und einen Ort gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts und Solidariät
werden.


Ausgangssituation
• Europas Baukultur, Baustile, Städte stark von Kirchen geprägt - z.B. Romanik, Gotik
• Orts- bzw Stadtkern = ident mit Kirchenstandort - Zentrum sozialen, kulturellen Lebens - identitätsstiftende Mittelpunkte von Stadt, Gemeinde, Quartier
• Orte des Zusammenkommens, des Feierns, der Erinnerung und Gedenkens, der Stille, des Gesprächs und der Gemeinschaft
• Herausforderungen wie energietechnischer Zustand, Erhaltungskosten, Behaglichkeit, sichern der gesellschaftlichen Anbindung erfordern neue innovative Zugänge
Kirchliche Gebäude bieten enormen Potential (Vielzahl, Lage, Historie) zur breitenwirksamen, europaweiten Umsetzung der NEB-Initiative – es braucht dazu allerdings ein konkretes, skalierbares Vorzeigeprojekt, das prototypisch die reale Umsetzbarkeit demonstriert. Dieser europaweite Prototyp soll das Pionierprojekt „NEB HOME St. Martin“ sein!


Ziele
• Erstmalige Pionier-Transformation eines denkmalgeschützten Kirchen-Ensembles in ein NEB-Quartier
• Gemeinschaftliche, generationsübergreifende Prozess- und Zielentwicklung für das Quartier
• Vorbereitung der konkreten Projektumsetzung und der Skalierbarkeit (Projektanspruch: Skalierbares, multiplizierbares Pionierprojekt schaffen)


Innovationsgehalt
1.) Baukulturelles Potential von Kirchen und sakraler Räume als urbane Innovationsplattform nutzen – ein europäischer Pionieransatz
Erstmals wird ein unter Denkmalschutz stehendes, aktiv genutztes kirchliches Gebäude-Ensemble im urbanen Raum als skalierbare Plattform für die praktische Verankerung der NEB-Initiative in Quartiers- und Stadtteilentwicklungsprojekten genutzt.
Erstes NEB-Quartier Europas, das baukulturelles Potential von Kirchen aufgreift und als Plattform nutzt, um für das NEB beispielhaft vorzuzeigen, wie die Initiative tatsächlich breitenwirksam für alle Orte und Städte implementiert werden kann („Jedes Dorf hat ein Kirchengebäude“)
2.) Vereinbarkeit von Denkmalschutz und dynamischer Multifunktionalität demonstrieren
3.) Vollumfängliche Implementierung der NEB-Prinzipien in einem besonders herausfordernden, ambitionierten Anwendungsfall

Abstract

motivation
Typically in any Austrian or European city or town a church building can be found – usually located right in the center. One famous example might be St. Stephen’s Cathedral, which basically marks the heart of Vienna. There are over 500,000 sacred buildings across Europe – and these buildings therefore offer enormous potential to:
• make the NEB initiative broadly relevant and accessible to people
• initiate local participation initiatives
• bring local communities together and network them in “community centers”.

"St. Martin - Liefering" is a listed church ensemble. It is a representative example for church complexes and therefore a good to serve as a scaleable pilot project to demonstrate how to
• transform a church ensemble into a NEB quarter in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and participatory manner
• develop an inclusive, identity-forming "community center" for surrounding neighborhoods
• shape a place where everyone is welcome and accepted - "at home" –
• and a place of social cohesion and solidarity

Initial Situation
• Europe's building culture, architectural styles, and cities are strongly influenced by churches – e.g., Romanesque art, Gothic art
• Town or city center = identical to the church location – center of social and cultural life – identity-forming focal points of the city, community, and neighborhood
• Places of gathering, celebration, remembrance and commemoration, silence, conversation, and community
• Challenges such as energy efficiency, maintenance costs, comfort, and ensuring social connections require new, innovative approaches.

Church buildings offer huge potential due to their number, location and history across Europe for boosting the NEB initiative. However, a scalable boald showcase project is required that demonstrates real feasibility in a prototypical way. This Europe-wide prototype will be the pioneering project "NEB HOME St. Martin"!

Objectives
• First-time pioneering transformation of a listed church ensemble into a NEB quarter
• Collaborative, intergenerational process and goal development for the quarter
• Preparation of concrete project implementation and scalability (project objective: create a scalable, replicable pioneering project)

Innovative Content
1.) Harnessing the architectural and cultural potential of churches and sacred spaces as an urban innovation platform – a European pioneering approach: For the first time, a listed, actively used church building ensemble in an urban area will be used as a scalable platform for the practical integration of the NEB initiative into neighborhood and district development projects. Europe's first NEB quarter to embrace the architectural potential of churches and use it as a platform to demonstrate how the initiative can truly be implemented broadly for all towns and cities ("Every village has a church building").
2.) Demonstration that listed building complexes do have the potential for dynamic multifunctionality
3.) high ambition level to implement all NEB principles to a high extend in a very challenging surrounding

• a boald vision – ready to be implemented – of the NEB quarter "HOMEBASE St. Martin" with NEB objectives – including vision, objectives, strategies for implementation, operation, specific measures, financing and timeline
