Projektantrag WIZARD – Wasserstoff-Infrastruktur für zukunftsweisende Anwendungen und den technologischen Durchbruch in Österreich
Die Transformation des österreichischen Energiesystems zur Klimaneutralität stellt eine zentrale Herausforderung dar. Wasserstoff (H₂) gilt dabei als Schlüsseltechnologie für die Dekarbonisierung von Industrie, Energie und Mobilität.
Das Projekt WIZARD („Wasserstoff-Infrastruktur für zukunftsweisende Anwendungen und den technologischen Durchbruch in Österreich“) verfolgt das Ziel, ein strategisches Konzept für den Ausbau der Wasserstoff-Forschungsinfrastruktur in Österreich zu entwickeln. Getragen wird es vom AIT Austrian Institute of Technology und dem Hydrogen Center Austria (HyCentA).
Ausgangspunkt ist eine fragmentierte Forschungslandschaft mit technologisch hochwertigen, aber kleinteiligen Infrastrukturen. Es fehlt eine national abgestimmte Strategie mit kritischer Masse – vergleichbar mit den Wasserstoff-Leitprojekten in Deutschland. HyCentA und AIT bringen dafür bereits etablierte Infrastrukturen, Know-How und Erfahrung mit und verfügen über großes Ausbaupotenzial.
Ziel des Projekts WIZARD ist die Entwicklung eines realisierbaren Konzepts für eine vernetzte, modulare und anwendungsorientierte Wasserstoff-Forschungsinfrastruktur in Österreich. Sie soll die Lücke zwischen Grundlagenforschung und industrieller Umsetzung schließen und die Innovationskraft im Bereich Wasserstoff stärken.
Der methodische Ansatz umfasst folgende Schritte:
• Zieldefinition & Gap-Analyse
Bewertung bestehender Infrastrukturen und Identifikation von Ausbaubedarf mittels Workshops, Interviews und Bestandsaufnahmen.
• Vergleich & Benchmarking
Analyse europäischer Wasserstoff-Infrastrukturen inkl. Finanzierungsmethoden zur Einordnung im internationalen Kontext.
• Investitions- & Finanzierungsplanung
Ermittlung des Infrastrukturbedarfs, Kostenabschätzung, Entwicklung von Finanzierungsmodellen und Risikobewertung.
• Strategischer Nutzen & Impact-Analyse
Bewertung technologischer, wirtschaftlicher und ökologischer Potenziale inklusive Skalierung, Nachhaltigkeit und Kreislaufwirtschaft.
• Zusammenführung & Empfehlung
Entwicklung eines Bewertungsrahmens mit KPIs sowie Ableitung konkreter Handlungsempfehlungen und Umsetzungsoptionen.
Das Projekt WIZARD leistet einen strategischen Beitrag zur Stärkung der österreichischen Wasserstoffwirtschaft, indem es ein zukunftsfähiges, modular aufgebautes Infrastrukturkonzept entwickelt, das Forschung, Industrie, Politik und Gesellschaft gleichermaßen adressiert. Es schafft Zugang zu modernster Prüftechnik für Hochschulen, ermöglicht Unternehmen die Entwicklung und Vorzertifizierung neuer Wasserstofftechnologien, bietet der Politik fundierte Entscheidungsgrundlagen für Förder- und Standortstrategien und beschleunigt die Marktdurchdringung klimafreundlicher Lösungen. WIZARD fördert Österreichs internationale Sichtbarkeit im Wasserstoffsektor, verknüpft bestehende Kompetenzen mit neuen Partnern, stärkt regionale Wertschöpfung und Beschäftigung und unterstützt die Umsetzung der nationalen Wasserstoffstrategie. Durch den frühzeitigen Einbezug relevanter Stakeholder schafft das Projekt eine realistische Grundlage für die nachhaltige Entwicklung eines wettbewerbsfähigen H₂-Ökosystems „Made in Austria“

Abstract

Project Proposal WIZARD – Hydrogen Infrastructure for Future-Oriented Applications and Technological Breakthroughs in Austria

The transformation of Austria’s energy system toward climate neutrality presents a major national challenge. Hydrogen (H₂) is considered a key technology for the decarbonization of industry, energy, and mobility.

The project WIZARD (“Hydrogen Infrastructure for Future-Oriented Applications and Technological Breakthroughs in Austria”) aims to develop a strategic concept for expanding Austria’s hydrogen research infrastructure. It is led by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and the Hydrogen Center Austria (HyCentA).

Austria’s current research landscape is fragmented, with technologically advanced but small-scale infrastructure. A nationally coordinated strategy with critical mass is lacking—comparable to Germany’s flagship hydrogen projects. HyCentA and AIT already bring established infrastructure, know-how, and experience to the table, and possess significant potential for expansion.

WIZARD’s objective is to develop a feasible concept for a networked, modular, and application-oriented hydrogen research infrastructure in Austria. It aims to bridge the gap between fundamental research and industrial implementation while strengthening hydrogen innovation capabilities.

The methodological approach includes the following steps:

Goal Definition & Gap Analysis
Evaluation of existing infrastructure and identification of expansion needs through workshops, interviews, and surveys.

Comparison & Benchmarking
Analysis of European hydrogen infrastructures, including financing models, to position Austria in an international context.

Investment & Financing Planning
Assessment of infrastructure needs, cost estimation, development of financing models, and risk assessment.

Strategic Benefits & Impact Analysis
Evaluation of technological, economic, and environmental potential, including scalability, sustainability, and circular economy aspects.

Synthesis & Recommendations
Development of a KPI-based evaluation framework, including actionable recommendations and implementation options.

WIZARD makes a strategic contribution to strengthening Austria’s hydrogen economy by designing a future-oriented, modular infrastructure concept that addresses the needs of research, industry, policymakers, and society alike. It provides universities with access to state-of-the-art testing facilities, supports companies in the development and pre-certification of hydrogen technologies, and offers policymakers a robust basis for funding and location strategies. By accelerating the market uptake of climate-friendly hydrogen solutions, WIZARD enhances Austria’s international visibility in the hydrogen sector, links existing expertise with new partners, drives regional economic growth and job creation, and supports the implementation of the national hydrogen strategy. Through early involvement of key stakeholders, the project lays a realistic and actionable foundation for building a competitive hydrogen ecosystem “Made in Austria.”
