Urban Research and Data Stewardship for Innovation, Sustainability and Engagement

Projektbeschreibung

Ausgangssituation und Motivation:
Interdisziplinäre Forschungsprojekte, ein entsprechendes Forschungsdatenmanagement und ein darauf abgestimmter Innovationstransfer sind zentrale Elemente für den Beitrag von Universitäten zu den EU-Missionen. Mit entsprechenden, fachübergreifenden Forschungs- und Innovationsstrukturen hat die Universität Wien dafür wichtige Voraussetzungen geschaffen. Das ebenfalls bereits aufgebaute Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM) und die entsprechenden Data Stewards sind bislang auf einzelne Disziplinen/ Fakultäten fokussiert. Es fehlt jedoch an themenspezifischer, missionsorientierter Unterstützung für datenintensive Forschung in dem Bereich Stadt. Mit dem Aufbau dieses thematisch fokussierten FDM soll sowohl die Forschung in den entsprechenden Bereichen als auch neue (partizipative) Forschungsansätze unterstützt und der für die EU-Missionen zentrale Innovations- und Wissensaustausch gestärkt werden.

Ziele und Innovationsgehalt:
1. Mission-spezifischer FDM Support: Forschungsprojekte mit Relevanz für urbane Transformation erhalten bedarfsspezifische Unterstützung bei Datenstrukturierung, Metadatenentwicklung und FAIRer Datenaufbereitung. Dies stärkt die Open-Science-Kompatibilität und die Nachnutzung komplexer Datenbestände. Diese Maßnahmen beinhalten auch die Unterstützung partizipativer Forschungsansätze.

2. Mission-spezifischer Wissensaustausch: Die Stelle verknüpft interne Forschungsaktivitäten mit externen Akteur*innen (z. B. Städte, Kompetenzzentren, Unternehmen), fördert offene Datenkulturen und Infrastrukturen und schafft Synergien durch innovative Formate (u.a. UniVie Connect, green innovation labs oder Science4Policy Initiativen). Unterstützt werden sollen auch explizit Open-Innovation-Formate mit externen Akteuren.

Angestrebte Ergebnisse und Erkenntnisse:
Das Projekt schafft nachhaltige Dateninfrastrukturen für Forschung, Politik und Gesellschaft. Zu den konkreten Ergebnissen zählen:
- Standardisierte, nachnutzbare Datenpraktiken in urbanen Forschungsfeldern.
- Verstärkter Dialog und Austausch mit externen Stakeholdern über wechselseitige Nutzbarmachung von Datenressourcen, Open-Data-Formate und kooperative Innovationsprojekte, ggf. inkl. der Abstimmung mit externen Dateninfrastrukturen/ Repositorien.
- Institutionalisierte Unterstützungsprozesse für EU-Missionsprojekte durch spezialisierte Data Stewards.
- Unterstützung der Mission-fokussierten, forschungsgeleiteten Ausbildung neuer Mission-Expert*innen für den nicht-akademischen Arbeitsmarkt.

So leistet das Projekt einen direkten Beitrag zu den Zielen der EU-Mission Cities und demonstriert, wie universitärer Wissensbestand durch gezieltes FDM gesellschaftliche Transformationsprozesse beschleunigen kann.

Abstract

Starting point and motivation:
Interdisciplinary research projects, appropriate research data management and a coordinated transfer of innovation are central elements for the contribution of universities to EU missions. The University of Vienna has created important prerequisites for this with appropriate, interdisciplinary research and innovation structures. The research data management (RDM) that has also already been established and the corresponding data stewards have so far been focused on individual disciplines/faculties. However, there is a lack of topic-specific, mission-oriented support for data-intensive research in the urban area. The establishment of this thematically focused RDM is intended to support research in the relevant areas as well as new (participatory) research approaches and strengthen the exchange of innovation and knowledge that is central to EU missions.

Objectives and innovative potential:
1. Mission-specific RDM support: Research projects relevant to urban transformations receive needs-specific support for data structuring, metadata development and FAIR data preparation. This strengthens open science compatibility and the reuse of complex data sets. These measures also include support for participatory research approaches.

2. Mission-specific knowledge exchange: The position links internal research activities with external stakeholders (e.g. cities, competence centers, companies), promotes open data cultures and infrastructures and creates synergies through innovative formats (e.g. UniVie Connect, green innovation labs or Science4Policy initiatives). It also explicitly supports open innovation formats with external stakeholders.

Intended results and findings:
The project creates sustainable data infrastructures for research, politics and society. The concrete results include
- Standardized, reusable data practices in urban research fields.
- Increased dialogue and exchange with external stakeholders on the mutual utilization of data resources, open data formats and cooperative innovation projects, including coordination with external data infrastructures/repositories where appropriate.
- Institutionalized support processes for EU mission projects through specialized data stewards.
- Support for mission-focused, research-led training of new mission experts for the non-academic labor market.

In this way, the project makes a direct contribution to the objectives of the EU Mission Cities and demonstrates how university knowledge can accelerate social transformation processes through targeted RDM.
