Photonics Austria – Plattform zur Förderung der österreichischen Interessen im Bereich Photonik

Photonische Technologien bieten gegenüber herkömmlichen Technologien Vorteile, was die Energieeffizienz, Prozessgeschwindigkeiten und Stückkosten betrifft. Eine Vielzahl an Optionen wird durch Photonik aber erst ermöglicht. Quantentechnologien sind zwar noch nicht im gleichen Umfang am Markt angekommen, bieten aber große Zukunftspotenziale, wie die drei Nobelpreise für Physik und Chemie aus dem Umfeld der Photonik und Quantentechnologie in den letzten zwei Jahre nahe legen. Um die noch offenen Potenziale der beiden Technologien bestmöglich ausschöpfen und insbesondere deren Diffusion in die breite Gesellschaft vorantreiben zu können, ist jedoch noch viel Entwicklungs- und Vernetzungsarbeit zu leisten.

Photonics Austria wurde 2013 als gemeinnütziger Verein zur Förderung der österreichischen Interessen im Bereich Photonik gegründet. Mittlerweile gehören dem Verein 58 Organisationen an, wobei rund ein Drittel davon einen Bezug zu Quantentechnologien aufweist. Über 100 Expert*innen sind regelmäßig in Aktivitäten der Plattform eingebunden und setzen zahlreiche Events, Projekte, Initiativen und Publikationen gemeinsam um.

Dieses große Umsetzungspotenzial soll im Projekt noch um weitere Mitglieder – vor allem in Richtung unternehmerische Quantentechnologien – ausgebaut werden und die gemeinsamen Aktivitäten zur Unterstützung der öffentlichen Hand zum Erreichen der österreichischen und europäischen Ziele kanalisiert werden.

Die geplanten Aktivitäten des Projekts sind interdisziplinär und komplementär angelegt, um das Ökosystem der Photonik und Quanten Community in Österreich ganzheitlich zu unterstützen. Klassische Leistungen und Services eines Clusters wie zB Kontaktvermittlung und nationale Vernetzung werden durch die speziellen Möglichkeiten von Photonics Austria ergänzt, wie zB Vernetzung mit über 10 internationalen Partnerplattformen oder Vermittlung von Financial Support to Third Parties für KMU durch Horizon Europe-Projekte, um ein umfangreiches Serviceportfolio für die Photonik und Quantencommunity bieten zu können. Hinzu kommen über 10 Veranstaltungen über die nächsten zwei Jahre, die den Forschungsnachwuchs adressieren und von Schulworkshops über Vernetzungsevents zwischen Studierenden und Unternehmen bis hin zu Flagship-Events für Photonik und Quantentechnologie reichen. Diese umfangreichen Angebote sollen die bestehenden und weitere Schlüsselakteure der Photonik und Quantencommunity aktivieren, ihren Input zu verschiedenen Veröffentlichungen und Informationsmaterialien für Photonik und Quantentechnologien abzugeben. Insbesondere soll die Technologie-Roadmap der Photonik in Österreich ein Update erfahren sowie die Schwerpunkte der Arbeitsgruppen in Photonics Austria (Laserproduktion, Bildung, GreenSociety und Quanten) mit neuen Informationen für Öffentlichkeit, potenzielle Partner und öffentliche Hand aufwarten.

Abstract

Photonic technologies offer advantages over conventional technologies in terms of energy efficiency, process speeds and unit costs. On top of that, a multitude of products and technologies are enabled by photonics. Although quantum technologies have not yet reached the market to the same extent, they offer great potential for the future, as demonstrated by the three Nobel Prizes for physics and chemistry in the field of photonics and quantum technology in the last two years.

However, in order to make the best possible use of the potential of the two technologies and, in particular, to promote their diffusion into broader society, a lot of development and networking work still needs to be done.

Photonics Austria was founded in 2013 as a non-profit association to promote Austrian interests in the field of photonics. The association now includes 58 organizations, around a third of which have a connection to quantum technologies. Over 100 experts are regularly involved in the platform's activities and numerous joint events, projects, initiatives and publications are implemented together.

This huge potential is to be expanded in the project to include additional members - especially in the direction of entrepreneurial quantum technologies - and the joint activities will be channeled to support the public sector's strategies to achieve Austrian and European goals.

The planned activities of the project are interdisciplinary and complementary in order to holistically support the photonics and quantum community ecosystem in Austria. Classic services of a cluster such as contact placement and national networking are supplemented by the special opportunities Photonics Austria is offering, such as networking with over 10 international partner platforms or arranging financial support to third parties for SMEs through Horizon Europe projects, to create an extensive service portfolio for the photonics and quantum community. On top of that over 10 events will be organized over the next two years that address young researchers and range from school workshops to networking events between students and companies to flagship events for photonics and quantum technology. These extensive benefits are intended to encourage existing and other key stakeholders in the photonics and quantum community to provide their input on various publications and information materials for photonics and quantum technologies. In particular, the technology roadmap for photonics in Austria will be updated and the focal points of the working groups in Photonics Austria (laser production, education, Green society and quantum) will provide new information for the public, potential partners and the public sector.
