NEFI+ - New Energy for Industry

Projektbeschreibung

NEFI+ - New Energy for Industry (NEFI+) baut auf einer mehr als 5-jährigen Erfahrung generiert im Rahmen der Vorzeigeregion NEFI – New Energy for Industry (NEFI) auf. Die enge Verflechtung von 120 Partnerunternehmen, 5 institutionellen Partnern und 14 Forschungseinrichtungen in 24 Projekten im Innovationsnetzwerk NEFI, löste ein Investitionsvolumen von rund 95 Millionen Euro aus. Die dadurch geschaffenen Synergien tragen maßgebend zur Dekarbonisierung der Industrie bei.

Vor allem die NEFI Szenarien lassen Wege in eine vollständig klimaneutrale Zukunft der Industrie erkennen, machen aber deutlich, dass eine Transformation dieses Ausmaßes, weitere Schritte erfordert:
i. Pilotprojekte für nicht skalierte Technologien,
ii. der Übergang von Prototypen zu praktikablen Industrielösungen und
iii. die Identifizierung wichtiger Handlungsfelder für begleitende Rahmenbedingungen (z.B. Erkennen von Auswirkungen innovativer Technologien auf die Infrastruktur)
Dies wird noch untermauert durch die Ergebnisse des aktuell durchgeführten Impact Assessments einer Reihe abgeschlossener NEFI-Sub-Projekte, welches zeigt, dass ein intrasektorales und sektorübergreifendes Ausrollen der projektspezifisch entwickelten Technologien essentiell ist um die industriebezogenen CO2-Emissionen zu senken.

Genau diese Perspektive inkl. der damit verbunden Herausforderungen verstärkt das Bestreben des durch NEFI etablierten Konsortiums rund um Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL, Leitung), AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Business Upper Austria (BIZ), und OÖ Energiesparverband (ESV) ihre Aktivitäten über NEFI+ auszweiten. NEFI+, als das Innovationslabor der „FTI Initiative Transformation der Industrie“, zielt darauf ab die österreichische produzierende Industrie bis 2030 bei der Entwicklung, Erprobung und Ausrollung von Innovationen zur dauerhaften Reduktion prozessinduzierter THG-Emissionen zu unterstützen. Als nationale Anlaufstelle und internationales Tor soll es den Durchbruch von Innovationen „Made in Austria“ fördern und als Katalysator den Transformationsprozess der Industrie in Richtung Klimaneutralität anstoßen und wissenschaftlich begleiten.
Dafür setzt NEFI+ einen Schwerpunkt beim Aufbau eines skalierbaren Innovationsökosystems, um für die beteiligten Stakeholder:innen internationale Anknüpfung zu garantieren. Durch enge Vernetzung von Industrie und Forschung mit weiteren Stakeholder:innen (Technologieanbieter, Wirtschaft und Politik) über „Innovation Hubs“ werden Sub-Projekte entwickelt, umgesetzt und begleitet. Die aus den Sub-Projekten gewonnenen Erkenntnisse werden eingesetzt um die Wirkung von Skalierungs- und Multiplikationseffekten auf die Wertschöpfung des industriellen Sektors, die Klimaziele und den Industriestandort Österreich abzuschätzen. In diesem Zusammenhang ist es für NEFI+ außerdem wichtig, künftige Entwicklungen der Energieinfrastruktur zu berücksichtigen, um die Versorgungssicherheit für die Industrie zu gewährleisten. Zudem wird ein niederschwelliger Zugang zu Entwicklungs- und Testumgebungen geboten, um sektoren- und technologieübergreifende Innovationen zu fördern. Unterstützende Aktivitäten sind die Beobachtung globaler Trends, Daten- und Wissensmanagement, sowie die Stakeholder:innen spezifische Kommunikation.

Abstract

NEFI+ - New Energy for Industry (NEFI+) builds upon more than five-years’ experience gained within the innovation network NEFI-New Energy for Industry (NEFI). The strong NEFI innovation network of more than 120 partners, 5 institutional partners and 14 research institutions is currently active in 24 sub-projects and triggered an investment volume of approx. 95 Mill. €. The resulting synergies are contributing significantly to achieve a climate-neutral industry.
Especially the NEFI transformation pathways outline recommendations towards a climate-neutral industry and emphasize the need for further steps to facilitate this transformation:
i. Launching pilot projects for non-scaled technologies,
ii. enabling the transition from prototypes to practical industrial solutions, and
iii. identifying needs for complementary frameworks (especially the future infrastructural requirements considering the impact of innovative technologies and technology transfers).
This is further underpinned by the results of the current impact assessment of a number of completed NEFI sub-projects, which shows that an intra- and cross-sectoral roll-out of technical and non-technical innovations is essential to reduce cumulative industry-related CO2 emissions.
This perspective, together with the associated challenges strengthens the efforts of the, through NEFI formed, consortium around Montanuniversität Leoben (MUL, management), AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT), Business Upper Austria (BIZ) and OÖ Energiesparverband (ESV) to expand their activities via NEFI+. NEFI+, as the innovation laboratory of the "RTI Initiative Transforming Industry", aims to support the Austrian manufacturing industry in the development, testing and roll-out of innovations for the permanent reduction of process-induced GHG emissions along with NEFI+ levers of action and its innovation hubs by 2030. As a national contact point and international gateway, NEFI+ promotes the breakthrough of innovations "Made in Austria" and initiates, as well as scientifically supports the industrial transformation process towards climate neutrality.
To ensure these objectives, NEFI+ focuses on building a scalable innovation ecosystem to guarantee international networking for stakeholders involved. By closely interlinking industry and research with other stakeholders (e.g. technology providers and politics) via "Innovation Hubs", sub-projects will be initiated, implemented and scientifically supported. The knowledge gained from the sub-projects will be used to assess the impact of scaling and multiplication effects on added value in the industrial sector, climate targets and Austria as an industrial location. In this context, it is also essential for NEFI+ to consider future energy infrastructure developments in order to guarantee energy supply security for industry.
As a national contact point for breakthrough innovations towards climate neutrality, an easy access to development and test environments is offered in order to promote intra- and cross-sectoral technology innovations. Supporting activities include the monitoring of global trends, data and knowledge management, as well as stakeholder-specific communication.
