Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

Civil aviation is growing worldwide − the A320 and B737 product families are in particularly high demand, with these two products having a very high aluminium content in their structural components. In 2018, an average of 53 units of the Airbus A320 Family were produced per month. A rate increase to 63 units/month is currently targeted for 2021, and further increases cannot be excluded. In order, to achieve production rates, cost targets but also raw material conservation, many of the currently established production techniques are no longer effective. A significant example is the current practice of "milling from the solid" of large structural components (e.g. frames). Therefore, the cooperative AVaiL-AT project, which will be carried out in close cooperation with the LuFo project AVaiL-DE (kick-off: April 2, 2020), aims to bring about a paradigm shift in the production of aircraft structures. The aim of AVaiL-AT is the substitution of proven, high-rate capable manufacturing processes (e.g. from the automotive sector) for resource-saving component production. The special requirements resulting from the use of mostly high-strength materials (e.g. Al7075, Al2024, Ti-alloys), which are especially relevant in the aviation industry, have to be considered. Specifically, the Austrian consortium is looking at processes such as 3D roll forming and various joining techniques. Consequently, no new process development is necessary to achieve the project objectives. The focus is much more on the necessary adaptations of existing processes with regard to material requirements and aviation standards. The evaluation of the demonstrators planned in the AVaiL-AT project by aerospace suppliers, aircraft manufacturers and their research partners (in AVaiL-DE) represents a great added value for Austrian suppliers. Above all, the transparent presentation of concrete requirement profiles as well as the joint development of individual component solutions guarantees the Austrian partners optimal access to the European aircraft construction value chain and the associated development of new market segments and additional sales potential.
