Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

Rail freight is characterized by constantly losing market share. Reasons for this loss are outdated technology, inadequate customer orientation, high level of inflexibility and missing sustainability concerning the business models. In addition, the use of wagons is usually characterized by very low productivity. Rail freight transport faces the great challenge of creating the turnaround as quickly as possible in the direction of more competitiveness and future viability. Based on diverse European scientific studies and strategy papers, the conclusion can be drawn that the success of rail freight transport in the future depends on several aspects (i.a. Interoperability, efficient modular transport systems and new logistics and business models (cooperation, bundling, sharing models, etc.)) that can be implemented as "enablers" using new digital tools. The consortium of the ‚SMARTY‘ project (Innofreight, Papierholz Austria, DanuRail, LOI partner Mondi-Europe, Graz University of Technology, Technical Computer Science, FH JOANNEUM Inst. Industrial Management) which focuses on logwood logistics, recognizes the chance to continue on the treading innovation path in the sense of the consistently pursuing a positive strategic orientation. At the same time the centre of attention lies on a meaningful strengthening and development of the railway system’s competitiveness.
The ‚SMARTY‘ project (‚Smart freight mobility‘) builds on the results of the successful project ‚Smart GigaWood‘ and continues this logically (supported by the FFG, project 867184, ‚FastForward‘ winner Styria 2019, nominated state prize for innovation 2019). What has been achieved so far is the development of the most efficient wagon for log transport based on a platform wagon for combined transport, i.e. fully modular, and the full digital equipment with development of its own digital platform ‚Innocloud‘, which also gives customers access to technical and logistical Data. ‚SMARTY‘ sets the next and most challenging steps for innovation. Development of a cooperative model of resource utilization in form of a ‚Smart GigaWood‘ sharing platform for several customers. The three innovation steps of SMARTY are the following:
1. Organization and logistics model for the management of a ‚Smart GigaWood‘ wagon sharing pool
2. Customer-oriented business model (including benefit and pricing model) for the sharing platform
3. Development of a prototype sharing platform as a management and communication platform for equipment, suppliers and customers (for implementation of former points).

Together with the customers (project partner: Papierholz Austria and DanuRail) the cooperation opportunities and the development of the sharing platform will be advanced. The test transports will be generated using the fully digitalized ‘Smart GigaWood’ wagon in a resource pool. This will also be tool for the implementation of the new business model.
‘SMARTY’ serves developments in the ‘laboratory format’ with a small pool of ‘Smart-GigaWood’ cars to create benefit on several levels but especially focuses on customer orientation. After the new developments of ‘SMARTY’ are finished a cooperative business model that is digitally implemented in a "sharing platform" as a prototype instrument are elaborated. We assume that the use of the new innovative elements in relation to the log wood logistics application is able to achieve a 28% increase regarding the productivity of resource (better compensation for load fluctuations, better coordination of return loads, etc.). Within the ‘SMARTY’ project, at least 30 wagons or 3 block trains are already used as a pool for cooperative business transactions. The "sharing platform" prototype serves as the starting point for further development into a future digital business field. We assume that the innovations created through the ‘SMARTY’ project will also be applicable to other sectors (iron and steel industry, energy, etc.). Due to the very successful development of the ‘Smart GigaWood’ wagon as part of the InnoWaggon family of Innofreight, a potential of several thousand wagons in a pool can be assumed.
