Projektbeschreibung
Abstract
Photonics is a key enabling technology for industry, research, and societal transformation. Together with quantum technologies, it forms an important foundation for future applications in areas such as communication, sensing, manufacturing, mobility, energy, health, security, and digitalisation. The project “Photonics Austria 26” strengthens Photonics Austria as the national networking platform for the Austrian photonics and quantum ecosystem and systematically continues existing activities.
Photonics Austria has been active as a non-profit association since 2013 and brings together more than 70 members from industry, universities, and non-university research organisations. The platform acts as a central interface between research, industry, public authorities, European networks, and the wider public. During the project period, networking, knowledge transfer, visibility, talent development, and the strategic positioning of the Austrian photonics and quantum community will be further expanded.
A particular focus is placed on strengthening the integration of photonics and quantum technologies. Since photonic components, lasers, detection, metrology, packaging, and testing infrastructure are indispensable for many quantum technologies, joint activities with the Austrian quantum community will be established. These include joint events, coordinated roadmap processes, committee work, and information services. In this way, synergies will be leveraged, duplication avoided, and Austria’s position in European and international programmes strengthened.
The project includes regular member meetings, working group meetings, networking formats, matchmaking, roadshows for industrial end users, and cooperation with other platforms. In addition, international visibility will be increased through trade fair appearances, conference participation, European platform contacts, and the representation of Austrian interests in relevant bodies. This supports technology transfer into companies and facilitates access to research, infrastructure, and funding opportunities.
Another central pillar is the promotion of young researchers and talent. School workshops, cooperation with educational institutions, competitions, information formats, and career events are intended to inspire young people to engage with photonics, quantum technologies, and STEM professions. Diversity, inclusion, and the targeted involvement of underrepresented groups are given particular consideration. Students will be connected with companies and research institutions to make career paths in the Austrian photonics and quantum sector more visible.
To support public authorities, technological trends, needs, and positions from the community will be collected in a structured way and prepared for strategic processes. These include roadmap updates, briefings, white papers, and inputs for funding programmes. Public outreach via the website, social media, press partnerships, and flagship events such as the International Day of Light and World Quantum Day will increase the visibility of photonics and quantum technologies.
Overall, the project contributes to strengthening photonics and quantum technologies as key areas of the Austrian research and innovation landscape, securing international connectivity, and achieving long-term economic, technological, and societal impact.
