Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

The establishment of the endowed professorship Tunnel Information Modeling (TIM) will further strengthen the research competencies of the University of Innsbruck (UIBK) in the fields of natural and engineering sciences. Digital tools for the realization of large-scale underground construction projects will be developed, transferred to the construction practice and teaching at the University. The new possibilities for the planning, construction and operation of underground structures, resulting from the integration of digital models and building information modeling (BIM), mathematical simulation and machine learning, will be investigated in close cooperation with stakeholders from the construction practice in order to develop a holistic, lifecycle-oriented tunnel information model.
Furthermore, the UIBK plans to implement an international master’s programme “Digital and Automated Underground Engineering” in cooperation with the Ruhr University Bochum aiming at educating and training of students in these new technologies.
Relevant expertise at the UIBK covers all processes of underground engineering, from the planning, through the construction to the operating phase. Particularly noteworthy is the existing expertise in the field of BIM as well as in the parameterized component description via a property server. Scientists of the UIBK played a key role in the development of the so far only property server in Austria. In addition, the UIBK has proven expertise in building data modeling, surveying, rock exploration, construction operation and management, geotechnical investigations, material technology, numerical simulation of tunnel advance, waste and resource management, energy-efficient con¬struction, and the development of IT technologies as well as expertise concerning business and legal topics. With the establishment of the TIM endowed professorship, the University will thus not only recruit additional highly qualified personnel for research and teaching but will also bring together its existing competencies in civil engineering and underground construction and combine them with those in the field of digitization.
As a practical example for the development of demonstrators for such digital twins in underground engineering serves the nearby Brenner Base tunnel, a construction project of European dimension, which can be viewed as a "living laboratory" for the digitization of construction and operation processes.
The successful implementation of these demonstrators requires not only merging of competencies at the University, but also a deepening of the cooperation between the participating scientists and the employees of the Brenner Base tunnel Project Company and the companies involved in the application, Herrenknecht AG and TPH Bausysteme. The establishment of the endowed professorship strengthens the knowledge and technology transfer to the economy, i.e. the transfer of the developed tunnel information model into the construction practice.
