Projektbeschreibung

Abstract

The number of unoccupied stations is increasing in the course of the modernisation of ÖBB infrastructure facilities and the implementation of operations management centres. In this context, the exclusive use of information media such as posters creates new challenges for the provision of information. But there is also room for improvement at stations that have digital information elements and infopoints in the conventional sense. In addition to its function as a national, international and regional transport hub, railway stations are increasingly serving as shopping centres, which places high demands on a comprehensive, universally understandable guidance and information system.
The aim of this project is the user-oriented conception and prototypical development of information media at the station. The conceptual task in the development of a "Directional guidance system 4.0" in combination with an "Infopoint 4.0" is to create a holistic "Passenger Information System 4.0". At the same time, the overall concept should remain valid even if new or previously unconsidered media channels for the station are added in the future.
For the user-oriented conception, the information needs for the entire customer journey are worked out, to reveal the specific information needs. The most important use cases for the project are selected in consultation with the client ÖBB and a detailed description of the information requirements will be defined in regard to possible forms of media.
The developed concept considers the static and dynamic possibilities of information presentation and evaluates its possible use on the basis of local, temporal, content-related, technical and user-needs-oriented influencing factors. For the presentation of information, groundbreaking trends and technologies are taken up in consideration of the multi-sense principle and new innovative information and interaction designs are conceptually developed for the station as a multimodal transport hub. In a user centred design process, information and interaction designs are implemented prototypically and functionally in several iterations and the user experience and feasibility are evaluated with the aim of making the station easily and uncomplicatedly accessible for as many user groups as possible.
As a result of the project, a concept with technological, content-related, graphic and functional design guidelines for the future "Passenger Information System 4.0" of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), consisting of direction guidance system 4.0 and info box 4.0, will be available, which is oriented towards a modular structure and can be scaled to the respective requirements of the different types of stations.
